Blocks and Jigsaws.

Sunday, January 31st, 2010

Cuisenaire® Rods are a wonderful tool for teaching children mathematical concepts, they can be used for measuring, as demonstrated below.

However along with some simple wooden blocks the children in my care have found a wonderfully imaginative alternative use!

This is a “train in a tunnel.”

After some excellent construction work with the blocks and rods they did a gorgeous jigsaw. Working as a team to do a jigsaw is a great opportunity for co-operation and turn-taking.

Happy New Year

Saturday, January 23rd, 2010

Yes it’s a little late but better late than never! It’s been a busy start to the year, we had a new child join us so between absences due to illness and settling the wee one in it’s been a little less organised than usual.

However things are returning to normal.

I thought I’d share one of my favourite resources with you today, our treasure basket. This is a collection of everyday objects which I have gathered together. These include a pastry brush, a body puff and a honey dipper. Children of all ages love experimenting with them, tickling each other and enjoying the feel of the wood.

In the small wooden bowl are some large beads, the kind you get in garden centres to display in vases. As you can see these are great for sorting between containers (under very close supervision of course!)
